SILENT TIGER is a melodic rock band with members from Honduras and USA. They have just released their second album, "Twist Of Fate", which you really should check out.
The interview was done with Jean Funes (guitar) in late November 2023.
So, how come you decided to form SILENT TIGER and when was that?
- We decided to form the band in 2018 and it was a suggested idea by Andrew McNeice of Melodicrock records. We were working on a project called HEARTS ON FIRE with Swedish vocalist Richard Andermyr, and after we finished the album, Andrew hooked us up with American singer David Cagle to form another project. We talked about it and liked the idea and that was the beginning of SILENT TIGER. That same year we made some demos and begun to work on the first album, that was released in 2020.
Now it became our main thing and is much more than just a project. It's a band consisting of the three of us, David Cagle, Joel Mejia and me (Jean Funes).
You have a new album out now, which is really good. What can you say about that?
- Thank you! This new album took more time to make. It's a more mature and polished album than the debut I think. We were working on new songs since 2019, and we took the time to choose the right songs for the album and arrange them until we were happy with everything. Every song has an inspiration. As the main songwriter I always look to express something real and personal in every song. So this album is the result of those years of changes and new experiences for me.
The sound is more commercial and melodic and is an evolution for the band. It has a more modern sound for us but keeping the classic melodic rock approach.
How do you make your songs in the band, and what inspires you?
- As the main songwriter I take inspiration out of my life experiences and situations. I think that makes a song more honest and easier to relate to it. The process of making the song starts with a chorus or riff and the verses and everything else comes after. Then we jam together with Joel (drummer) to arrange the parts and establish time patterns and the song structure. We record that rehearsal and use it as a demo or reference. The last thing is to write the lyrics and melodies.
After that we record the skeleton of the song with drums and guitars, and send those to David, Mikael and Andreas to record their parts. We send the melodies and lyrics to David and he works on all the vocals including Background vocals.
Where did you get the name SILENT TIGER from, and what does it mean to you?
- The name is a nod to the 80s scene in some way. But there was an album called "Sylentiger" by the band TRYTAN in 1990 that I used to listen a lot and that name stuck in my head I guess. And also considering that I love tigers and their elegance and personality it was a good choice for a name. But we decided that between the members of the band after having a list of possible names.
So what's the next step in your career, any concerts or tours for example?
- We have plans to make some live shows in the near future and we are working on that. We don't want to keep SILENT TIGER as a project only, we want to be an active band. We wanted to do that since the first album, but the pandemic came and nothing could be done about playing live so we focused on writing more songs instead. I think now is the right time to do it.
