MACERATION: Serpent Devourment
Emanzipation Productions - Digital Single
Danish death metallers MACERATION gives us a new single, which seems to be a taste of a new album. They blend the heavy doomy main riff with fast aggressive parts. It sounds o.k., but it doesn't sound like a hit to me. On the other hand, are death metal songs meant to be hits? Probably not.. You might like it more than me though, so give it a try anyway.
In November 2022 MACERATION returned after 30 years with a new album, "It Never Ends...", with the legend Dan Swanö (EDGE OF SANITY, BLOODBATH etc) on vocals. The band also features members from INVOCATOR. Vocals on this song is handled by Jan Bergmann Jepsen, and it seems like they have 3 guitarists, which I think is unusual (at least for a death metal band).

Martin Rubashov: Nixe
Despotz Records - Digital Single
This is the second single from Martin Rubashov's (NOLAVÆR) upcoming album, "Origins Of Water", which will be released on February 21, 2025. It's just as last time soft and melancholic. About this song he says: "A ghost story with a melodic guitar riff. It's about flirting with the devil, who finds you in dark times and holds water as a tomb. Will you go there?". Sounds like perfect for Halloween then.
This sounds almost like a pop song to me actually. But I guess I can be kind enough to call it soft rock as it doesn't suck anyway. Even though it's dark, it's also catchy and energetic.
Could be something for those of you who want something laidback.

SKARLETT RIOT: Caelestia
Despotz Records - LP, CD, Digital
British modern metal quartet SKARLETT RIOT return with a new album. They mix melody and aggression with powerful riffs, and on top of that they have a very good singer in Skarlett. I guess we could describe their sound as a mixture of alternative metal and metalcore. But for playing that kind of stuff they are a very good band that I actually like. I might not like everything that they do, but most of it is of very high quality. And the songs on this album is no exception as it's nor better or worse than any of their previous records.
I would not say that it's exactly the same as their previous material though, as this band always go forward and expand their sound a little. You can still hear that it's SKARLETT RIOT, as they never go too far away from their original sound.
A modern metal album worth listening to.

SLIP~ons: Graystone
Scamindy Records - Digital Single
SLIP~ons is a power pop quartet featuring Canadian legends Brock Pytel of The DOUGHBOYS and Brian Minato, known for his work with Sarah McLachlan. The band also includes Rob "Shockk" Matharu of The SPITFIRES on guitar and Shane Wilson on drums. Together they want to capture the sound, energy and melodic hooks of bands such as HÜSKER DÜ, The POSIES, SOUL ASYLUM and The NILS, while also appealing to fans of The LEMONHEADS, ASH, The REPLACEMENTS and DINOSAUR JR. They are from Vancouver, BC and formed in 2012.
The Graystone was a venue in Detroit back in the late 80s, and this song is about that place and the adventures of playing there. It's catchy and melodic, and a very good song. You should really check this out if you like good rock.

The DISCARDED: Testify!
The Discarded - Digital Single
"Testify!" is taken from The DISCARDED's upcoming 6th album "The Green Door", which will be released on November 25.
The DISCARDED are described as "a father-and-sons garage rock trio with a raw, high-energy sound". It's also said that it will appeal to fans of RAMONES, ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT, SUPERSUCKERS and MOTÖRHEAD. So I had to check this out of course, as that sounded very interesting. But what do I really get?
Well, how should I describe this then? It's rocking, but sometimes when I listen it's like it's going nowhere. And that's not so good. It's not a totally useless song though, becuse other times it sounds catchy and really good. Weird.. Maybe you should give this song a few chances? Because the last time I heard it, then it was suddenly good again.
The band formed in 2016 in Orangeville, Ontario, Canada. The band features veteran rocker JP Wasson on guitar and vocals, alongside his sons, Caden Jax Wasson on drums and Jared Dean Wasson on bass. They were recently joined by Ben Keestra on guitar.

DEVIL'S CIGARETTE: Gimme All You Got
Wild Kingdom Records - Digital Single
Well, this young Swedish band really give all they got on their first single. They are among the most interesting bands in the Swedish action rock scene today, and deliver their songs with lots of hunger, energy and attitude.
This song is just 2 minutes, but I'm pretty sure that it's all that it takes to convince you how good they are. So if you have any interest at all in high-octane rock, then there's not much else to say. You simply check this out, and that's it!
DEVIL'S CIGARETTE will release their debut album, "I Wanna Be On TV", on November 22.

ASSASSIN: Skullblast
Massacre Records on Nov. 1 - MCD, 12" EP
The raw energy and the vocals sometimes makes me think of MOTÖRHEAD, even though it doesn't really sound like them as this is thrash metal. But many people see MOTÖRHEAD as innovators of thrash metal, even if they never really played that (according to Lemmy it was rock n roll), so I guess that this is what it could have sounded like if they actually had played thrash metal.
Anyway.. What this Germans are doing here sounds really good and old school. It's mainly straightforward with heaviness and groove. But we also get some new elements, like gang shouts (as they call it) and longer solos.
They end this 5-track EP with a cover of "The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown)", originally done by FLEETWOOD MAC, but more famous among metal fans with a version by JUDAS PRIEST.
"Skullblast" seems to be ASSASSIN's first EP ever. And for the first time ever all 5 members collaborated on all the songs.

The BOTTLE DOOM LAZY BAND: Clans Of The Alphane Moon
Sleeping Church Records on Nov. 1 - CD, Digital
Heavy and long pieces here. We talk about 8 to 11:48 minutes. The riffs are big and heavy, but there can also be psychedelic adventures when this French doom metal band invites you to their world. It sounds like music to get high to actually. And that they repeat the same thing over and over again is nothing unusual. Unfortunately for a little too long sometimes according to me. And listening to this without being high can be a little heavy. But if you want something heavy and psychedelic, then I'm pretty sure that this could be something for you.

BURIAL: Rejoice In Sin
Apocalyptic Witchcraft on Nov. 1
Oh, I'm glad that I decided to give this a chance, because this album is really good.
BURIAL is a no-nonsense black metal trio from the bleak industrial landscapes of Manchester, UK. They dedicate their sound to the truest satanic, ice-cold, blasphemous and goat worshipping origins of the genre. It's punchy and immediate, with a healthy dose of icy atmospheric riffs. They also show an underlying British charm, dark and absurd sense of humour, channelling a slight crust punk attitude.
I might not have much left for any satanic crap, but this sounds really good. So I can only recomend you to check this out.

DEAF LIZARD: The Last Odyssey
Electric Valley Records on Nov. 1 - LP, Digital
DEAF LIZARD is a stoner rock band from Germany, and this is their second album, which was recorded in their garage studio/rehearsal space, and is entirely self-produced. Across the 7 tracks they deliver heavy fuzz rock paired with psychedelic and doomy elements. It's rough and sweaty. Lots of heavy riffing.
They begin the album with a instrumental track. And then it takes almost 2 minutes before there's any vocals in the second track, which is enough to make you start thinking that it might be a instrumental band (luckily they were not).
So far they have just been good. But when we comes to the third song, "City Of Life", then they becomes really good. The 4th track, "Independent Terror", begin psychedelic, but soon becomes a very good song too, even if most of the song is instrumental (the vocals comes in during the last minute).
After that it's just good again. After a 4-minute song, they end the album with 2 longer songs, that are 8 and a half minutes and 7 minutes. And yes, that last song is another instrumental song.

RIMBACHER: High Hopes On The Rocks
Inverse Records on Nov. 1 - CD, Digital
This is the debut album from this Finnish hard rock band, and it sounds really good to me. They seems to blend in classic rock and rock n roll to their sound, which gives it some extra swing. And isen't there a pinch of sleaze rock sometimes as well? Most of all I think it's good old hard rock from the 80s, but with a modern touch (the production).
The songs are really good, so this is a promising album, and you should of course check it out. And there's not much else to say..

SWEET ELECTRIC: The Monsters Are Rising
Sweet Electric on Nov. 1 - LP, CD, Digital
This German band play American rock like it sounded in the 70s, and this is their debut album. Think of something like AEROSMITH or GRAND FUNK RAILROAD possibly. But sometimes there's also some AC/DC, LED ZEPPELIN or even QUEEN. So classic rock n roll you could say. If you like that kind of stuff, then it's not impossible that you will enjoy SWEET ELECTRIC too. It's just as simple as that. Because this is really good and not much else to say.
Frontman Brad Marr has been a member of Australian band MASSIVE.

OMINUM: War For Peace
Witches Brew on Oct. 30 - MCD
OMINUM is a thrash trio from Gothenburg, Sweden formed in 2018. After releasing a demo and 4 singles, they signed with Witches Brew and released their debut album, "Monument", in 2022. Soon after that the digital single "Epitaph" was released, and by mid-2023 they had written 3 more songs. These tracks formed the basis of the "War For Peace" EP, which the band self-released digitally in December 2023. And it is now also available on a CD, with 3 new tracks and 2 bonus tracks.
They combine heavy riffs, aggressive rhythms and virtuoso musicianship. It's technical and complex. You could almost say that this is progressive thrash metal actually. Very skilled guys. Luckily it's not too advanced though, so it's still listenable and very good.
While most of these songs are around 4 to 5 and a half minutes, the last track, "Epitaph", is 10 minutes long. This gives us almost half an hour of brilliant thrash.

BLACK DENIM RAGE: Chaos Of War
Witches Brew - CD, Digital
From southern Florida comes these street thrashers, and this is their second album, where they deliver a energetic mixture of thrash, speed and heavy metal. The aggressive intensity is combined with melodic elements, and this new release is said to dive deeper into technical elements while maintaining the band's core sound.
BLACK DENIM RAGE was founded in 2019. Their debut album, "State of Emergency", was released in both English and Spanish in 2023.
We get 8 high-octane tracks here. It's most of all thrash and speed metal that I hear, and it sounds very old school and raw. So this is an album that is easy to like for me. You should really give these guys a chance.
blackdenimrage.bandcamp.com | witchesbrewthrashes.bandcamp.com

RAGE UNFOLD: Honour
Rage Unfold - Digital Single
RAGE UNFOLD is a international heavy metal trio with people from Bulgaria, Germany and Australia. The band comprises Bozhidar Popov (music, lyrics and production), Marie-Louise Anastas (lyrics and artwork development), and Siggi (vocals).
According to the press release: "'Honour' promises to deliver a hard-hitting sound infused with the band's signature style, drawing comparisons to legendary acts like IRON MAIDEN, METALLICA, and MOTÖRHEAD. With its compelling lyrics and powerful instrumentation, this single reflects the band's commitment to creating music that resonates with listeners on a personal level." They seems to focus on raw storytelling and powerful melodies.
Does this song live up to that description then? Well, att least they try. But compare them with the legends above is not right. I would describe this as a hard heavy/thrash metal song in the classic tradition. Pretty o.k., but hardly a hit.

Marshall Beck & The TOTALLY TOUGH GUYS: War Pigs
Marshall Beck & The Totally Tough Guys - Digital Single
Yes, it's a cover of the BLACK SABBATH classic "War Pigs" they are doing here. And they are actually doing it very good, and not too different from the original version, even if they add their own twist here and there. But you probably know this song already, so I don't think that I have to go any deeper into what it sounds like. Good anyway.
It's said that this release is more than just a metal track - it's a statement, giving a voice to disgruntled veterans and those questioning the motives behind global conflicts. This is also the first time bassist Kelly Conlon, a former member of death metal legends DEATH. is playing a BLACK SABBATH cover.

BOMBUS: Your Blood
Black Lodge Records on Nov. 1 - CD, LP, Digital
Old photo
Swedish band BOMBUS was formed in Göteborg (aka Gothenburg) in 2008, and has a history of successful albums released through Century Media. But now they have signed to Black Lodge Records instead.
On "Your Blood" they develop their sound a little bit more. But it's not like a new band, as you will still hear that it's BOMBUS. Their classic heavy rock/metal hybrid with a progressive touch is as usual a mix of heavy metal, classic rock and modern elements. It's just as heavy and powerful as they use to be, but also melodic.
This is the kind of album that might not impress that much the first time you hear it, but gets better and better the more you listen. So I'm pretty sure that it will be another success.

BROTHERS OF METAL: Fimbulvinter
AFM Records on Nov. 1 - 2LP, CD, Digital
Swedish metal vikings BROTHERS OF METAL pay homage to both heavy metal and the Norse gods, and have now come to their third studio album. To call this a magnum opus can feel somewhat excessive. But you can't deny the fact that it's a majestic album that they have made. We get 13 tracks here, and many different genres of metal. But I would say that the main ingredient here is epic heavy metal with a viking theme. And with the help of symphonic elements, it becomes so epic that it sounds almost like the soundtrack to an adventure movie, but performed by a heavy metal band then.
Most of these 13 tracks are good stuff, so if you like more majestic metal, then this could be something for you.

PAGANIZER: Flesh Requiem
Transcending Obscurity Records on Nov. 1 - LP, CD, Cassette, Digital
Paganizer press photo
Classic death metal is indeed still in good shape, and there have been a few excellent albums this year. Here's another one that you really should check out if you like the good old stuff. But I guess that wasn't so hard to figure out if you're familiar with these veterans since earlier. Because then you should already know that these Swedes always deliver high quality songs, and this album is no exception from that rule. Simply a must-have in every death metal collection. Simple as that.
PAGANIZER formed in the late 90s, and their extensive discography includes 12 full-length albums, 9 EPs, and numerous splits. I can tell you that I have just heard a handful of all those releases.

AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS: Cartoon Darkness
Rough Trade - LP, CD, Cassette, Digital
Amyl And The Sniffers
Well, the short version is that these Australian punk rockers have made another great album.
The long version is that I think they have made a more diverse material than ever before. Some of the songs might not always have worked as a single, but when they come together with the other songs on the album, it works much better. We have wild numbers, some rockers, and even what I think must be their first ever ballad. And I like it all! You really have to check this out!
"Cartoon Darkness" is an album about the world of today, with subjects like climate crisis, war, AI, tip-toeing on the eggshells of politics, and people feeling like they're helping by having a voice online when we're all just feeding the data beast of Big Tech. We look like adults but act like children. This gives us a mixture of darkness and fun.
AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS has previously released 2 albums, which are also worth listening to.

MC5: Heavy Lifting
earMUSIC - CD, LP, Digital
You can always ask yourself why a band get the idea to release a new album after 53 years since their last album was released? And another question could be why it's even called MC5 when it's more or less a solo album by guitarist Wayne Kramer? But let's put those questions aside..
MC5 is a legendary rock band from Detroit, who were active from the 60s to the early 70s. They are often seen as innovators of punk and protest rock, and has inspired many classic acts, from The CLASH and RAMONES to RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and The WHITE STRIPES etc. etc. The classic lineup consisted of vocalist Rob Tyner, guitarists Wayne Kramer and Fred "Sonic" Smith, bassist Michael Davis, and drummer Dennis "Machine Gun" Thompson. The band disbanded in 1972, but has since then been reunited in various shapes now and then. None of the original members of MC5 are alive today. Tyner died in 1991, and was followed by Smith in 1994. Davis passed away in 2012. In 2024 we lost Kramer in February and Thompson in May.
The project with this album was led by guitarist Wayne Kramer. But the album also features original MC5 drummer Dennis "Machine Gun" Thompson on 2 tracks, as well as an all-star lineup of guest musicians, like Slash (GUNS N' ROSES), Tom Morello (RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE), William DuVall (ALICE IN CHAINS), Vernon Reid (LIVING COLOUR), Don Was, and Tim McIlrath (RISE AGAINST), in addition to members of Kramer's MC5 touring band.
These 13 tracks is a wild mix of rock, but there's also some funk and soul. I didn't really expect it to sound like in the old days, and sure the production is modern of course, but they have actually suceeded to do something really similar to what the original band once did. And that's not bad. Luckily most of these songs sounds really good as well, so it could actually be worth checking out if you're a fan of the band. And if you have not heard them before, try one of their early records first, because that really kicks ass.

MAGNOLIA PARK: Oblivion Eyes
Epitaph Records - Digital Single
Orlando-based MAGNOLIA PARK seems a little strange to me, as they take influences from such widely different genres as nu metal, hard rock, hip-hop, EDM, and modern metalcore. It's like you never really know what you're going to get.
This latest single is supposed to be a nu metal/EDM crossover, and it features rapper Ethan Ross and DJ/producer Kayzo. Yet I must say that it doesn't sound totally useless. It's actually a pretty o.k. song, even if it has some parts that I don't really like as well.

LAMBRINI GIRLS: Big Dick Energy
City Slang - Digital Single
Brighton-based punk duo LAMBRINI GIRLS deliver yet another single. At the same time they announce that they will release their debut album, "Who Let The Dogs Out", on January 10, 2025.
"Big Dick Energy" is of course one of the songs on that album, and it's a energetic punk rock song that we get. If I get it right it's about the power of men in our society or something like that. It's a good song anyway, no doubt about that.
I look forward to hear the new album..
youtu.be/TJc0_-QvJtU

VIPËRWITCH: Witch Hunt: Road To Vengeance
Vipëperwitch on Oct. 31 - CD, Digital
This is the debut album from this American heavy metal band, which was founded by guitarist Danica "Lynx the Huntress" Minor 10 years ago. With this band Lynx bring forth all her prior knowledge of symphonic composition, jazzmetal guitar and fantasy literature writing. And maybe she's a little too ambitious?
If they could have concentrated on real songs instead of lots of intros and atmospheric pieces here and there, then it would have been so much better. Because their unpolished old school heavy metal songs and the dirty demo sound is great. So I want to like this album more than I actually do. But I simply don't like that other crap, I just want the music! It could have been a good EP instead.
Until next time, please cut the crap and just give us real heavy metal songs instead.

FOUL BODY AUTOPSY: The Discovery Of Witches
Foul Body Autopsy on Oct. 31 - 7" EP, Digital EP
"The Discovery Of Witches" is a 2-track EP inspired by 2 infamous witch trials that took place in band leader/guitarist/vocalist Tom Reynolds' hometown of Leicester, a century apart - in 1616 and 1717. On bass we find Linus Klausenitzer (ALKALOID, ex-OSCURA etc), and on drums we have Dirk Verbeuren (MEGADETH, SCARVE etc).
This trio fire off a melodic and more or less progressive kind of death metal. It's technical and powerful with brutal vocals, and luckily it sounds pretty good too. The songs are not eternity long, but just 2:42 and 2:48 minutes.
This is definitely worth checking out.
foulbodyautopsyofficial.bandcamp.com

DEITHESIS: Equilibrium
Sliptrick Records on Oct. 31 - CD
This is the debut album from this Irish heavy metal band. Their sound is traditional, but they also blend in elements of both thrash and doom. Guitar harmonies are woven into the heavy riffs to enhance the melodic nature of the material.
The result should be good, but I can's stop thinking: "So when are you going to play a good song then?" Never it seems.. It's just the same/same boring shit all the way. This is a band that should learn how to make songs that people actually want to listen to, because this is extremely boring. To me at least..
But o.k., now that I have complained so much, maybe I should say something positive too? Well, now that I listen to it 1 last time, I can at least hear that they seems to know how to play anyway, and that "Unseen" was actually not so bad. So that song could be worth a try of course. But for some reason most of the other songs are not of the same quality, except for maybe 1 or 2 songs.
The album was self-released digital last year, in case you don't want to pay for a CD or listen in advance.

NITROGODS: Valley Of The Gods
Massacre Records on Oct. 25 - CD, LP, Box Set, Digital
If you like MOTÖRHEAD (and who doesn't?), then this is a band for you. It might not be exactly like them, but it's definitely something similar and inspired by their songs. This can also work as a very good substitute for MOTÖRHEAD.
"Valley Of The Gods" is the fifth studio album from these 3 German hard rock n rollers. And I guess it's not so hard to figure out that this kicks ass. It's raw and dirty, true and real. But they also succeed to be catchy without sounding polished. They are simply doing everything right according to me.

TURKEY VULTURE: On The List
Turkey Vulture on Oct. 25 - MCD, Digital
Connecticut duo TURKEY VULTURE gives us a new 6-track EP, and these songs seems to be more punk and hardcore raw than they use to be. There use to be more stoner metal and blues in their mixture. But I like it, so I really don't complain. it's scrappy and dirty, while also being energetic.
The only odd song here is the last track, "Jill The Reaper", which I would describe as a gypsy folk song. Unexpected but funny.
This is a really good EP anyway, so maybe you should give this duo a try?
turkeyvulture.bandcamp.com/album/on-the-list

UNDERDOGS: Nine Ties
Go Down Records on Oct. 25 - LP, Digital
Italian heavy stoner power trio UNDERDOGS return with a new album after a long hiatus. And this comeback features the heavy sound of the early days, combined with greater technical awareness and a new hardcore/punk attitude. They mix different elements to create their trademark, and the new songs are clearly drawn from the 90s and have been influenced by post-punk and post-metal. Yes, the sound is heavy, but also very powerful, and this is not bad at all.
"Knockin' On Hell's Door" features guest vocals from Nick Oliveri (KYUSS, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, MONDO GENERATOR, The DWARVES).
UNDERDOGS formed in late 2004 in the Venice area. In 2015 they went on hiatus without officially disbanding, and in 2023 they were back again.

KINGS NEVER DIE: The Life & Times
Metalville Records on Oct. 25 - CD, LP
American hardcore band KINGS NEVER DIE released their debut album, "All The Rats", in May 2023, which was really good. Now they are getting ready to release their second full-length, "The Life & Times". And although it's not a concept album, it's what the title suggests. Side A is the life side based on personal stories, while Side B reflects on the times we live in.
This album have many anthem-like songs with big hooligan choruses and all. It's not the most aggressive hardcore that we get from this band, and it's not that fast or heavy either, but a almost melodic kind instead (in lack of a better description). It sounds good though, and there's lots of good songs here, so you should of course give these guys a try.

HARPYIE: Voodoo
Metalville Records on Oct. 25 - CD, Fan Box
HARPYIE is a folk rock/metal band from Bad Oeynhausen in western Germany, and they sing in German. On this new album they enter a new era, where they add elements of NU metal, pop and other modern stuff. Sometimes it's powerful, and somtimes more danceable. Sometimes it's more metal, sometimes more rock. This means that there's something for both the old and the young. I would guess that the main audience are people who knows German though.
Those modern elements might not impress me, but it's just included in a few of these songs, and the rest is actually not so bad at all. It's often melodic with heavy guitars, and mainly pretty catchy as well.
This is hardly a new band. They has already released 8 albums before "Voodoo".
metalville.de

HILD: Thrash På Svenska
Black Lion Records on Oct. 25 - CD, Digital
Thrash metal in Swedish is not a unique idea, if anybody would think that, because it has been done before. The title "Thrash På Svenska" is a salute to the iconic album "Jazz På Svenska" by Jan Johansson (Jan (rip) is the father of the hard rock brothers Anders and Jens Johansson, famous from acts like Yngwie Malmsteen's RISING FORCE, STRATOVARIUS and HAMMERFALL, to name a few of all bands they have played with through the years).
The vocals here is harsh enough to give the music a touch of hardcore/punk (it actually reminds me a little of Uno from Swedish hardcore/punk band ORAL), which I have nothing against. And some of the guitar melodies here and there seems to be influenced by Swedish folk music. While a song like "Kvinnokroppen Krälande" is a pure folk music ballad. So this is hardly any old school thrash metal, and in the end HILD is actually doing something unique.
They deliver their songs with a raw and violent energy, and captivating melodies. This is simply good stuff that you should check out.
HILD has since 2022 released 3 singles, 1 full-length album and 1 EP. This is their first release all in Swedish. The band is led by Lars Broddesson (ex-MARDUK, FUNERAL MIST).

NUCLEAR: Violent DNA
Black Lodge Records on Oct. 25 - MCD, MLP, Digital
NUCLEAR deliver a violent thrash/death attack straight in your face without any mercy. And it tickles really well. It's almost like I want to kick somebody over and over again. But instead I bang my head like a maniac.
This is the 7th studio release from these South Americans, where we get 3 new songs and 3 covers. It's fast and intense, and it will probably take you back to the early 90s. Really good stuff, so you should of course give this EP a listening or 15, because I'm pretty sure that you will like this too.

The PALE HORSES: Enchantress
Black Throne Productions on Oct. 25
The PALE HORSES are based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The earliest formations of the band date back as far as the late 90s as a side project, but it finally became a band in 2024.
This is the debut EP from this dark rock n roll band. They play on themes of fear and thrills exploring gothic horror, sex and drugs along with counter culture, occultism and self-empowerment. 1970s heavy metal forms a primary musical influence along with rock n roll rhythms, and sleazy riffs loaded with fuzz. So I would say that this is more like alternative hard rock n roll.
These 4 tracks sounds really good anyway, and you should definitely give them a try if you like it dark with melodic vocals and much distortion on the guitars.

ENFORCED: A Leap Into The Dark
Century Media on Oct. 25 - MLP, MCD
ENFORCED hails from Richmond, VA, and is known for their unrelenting blend of hardcore and thrash metal. The band formed in 2016, and has consistently delivered intense, hard-hitting music since then.
"A Leap Into The Dark" is a 6-track EP, where we get 3 brand new songs and 3 b-sides. 2 of the b-sides are covers of ENGLISH DOGS and OBITUARY.
To me this sounds most of all like old school thrash metal. But sure, they have that hardcore aggression in the vocals. It sounds really good anyway, there's no doubt about that, so you should really give these guys a try.
ENFORCED will support the EP with a European tour, which will last from October 30 to November 24.

RATT: Out Of The Cellar 40th Anniversary Edition (re-issue)
BMG on Oct. 25 - LP/7" single, CD
RATT's debut album, "Out Of The Cellar", was released 40 years ago. And they celebrate this with a re-release of the album, which also includes the previously unreleased song "Reach For The Sky" as a extra bonus (the song was recorded at the same time as the album).
This album is seen as a classic by many people, and there's no doubt that it is as there's plenty of good songs here, and I would not say that there's many weaker moments. So if you want some American hard rock from the 80s, and have not heard this album before, then it's about time that you check this out. And if you already have this album, then it might be time to check it out again.

HATCHET: Leave No Soul
M-Theory Audio on Oct. 25 - MLP, MCD, Cassette, Digital
HATCHET was formed in 2006 by some teenagers that shared a mutual love for the bands that built their hometown Bay Area's metal scene 2 decades prior. We talk about bands such as TESTAMENT, EXODUS, and the early work of then-Bay Area transplants METALLICA. They were signed by Metal Blade Records, and released 4 albums on that label between 2008-2018. Now they are signed to M-Theory Audio.
What we have here is a 5-track EP, where 2 of the songs are covers of W.A.S.P. and ANNIHILATOR. It sounds just like it should. In other words very old school, fast and raw, but with a modern production. You should really check this out if you like the early thrash bands from the States, and there's not much else to add about that.

DEADFORM: Entrenched In Hell
Tankcrimes on Oct. 25 - LP, CD, Cassette, Digital
DEADFORM is a Oakland-based sludge metal/crust punk trio, featuring members of LAUDANUM, STORMCROW and DYSTOPIA. A self-released demo was made in 2022, but this is their debut album, where we get 6 tracks. It's dark, heavy and drenched in distortion, but at the same time also raw.
This will probably make you think if it's crust, metal or punk. But I have figured out that it's all of them, at once. And if I'm going to compare them with something, then I would say that it's not impossible that fans of bands like AMEBIX and KILLING JOKE could like this. Not that I use to listen to those bands, but if I'm not totally wrong, this is something similar to what they used to do.
The CD features the demo as a bonus.

DAYTONA: Garder la Flamme
Escape Music on Oct. 25 - LP, CD, Digital
This band features Fredrik Werner (OSUKARU, AIR RAID), Erik Heikne (MISS BEHAVIOUR), Johan Berlin (ex-ECLIPSE, TimeScape), Niclas Lindblom (MISS BEHAVIOUR) and Calle Larsson. They love the sound of late 80s hard rock and have great ambitions. Yet it sounds like thousands of other melodic hard rock bands to me. But they are doing it just as good as any other band in this genre, so there's really no need to complain at all. I think this band can go far, as they have all the right ingredients for this kind of music. So I can just say good luck to you.

BLACK OAK COUNTY: III
Mighty Music on Oct. 25 - CD, LP, Digital
BLACK OAK COUNTY might sound like it would be a Southern rock band or something like that. But unfortunately not. This Danish band play a modern kind of hard rock with melodic choruses. They try so hard to convince me how great they are, but I'm not impressed. This is just not my type of music. But fans of bands like VOLBEAT, NICKELBACK and SHINEDOWN will probably be very happy to hear this.
But o.k., after listening a few times, I can at least admit that I have heard a lot worse. They seems to have the passion and energy, and a couple of songs have even become good - "Boom Boom Baby" and "Timebomb". So it's absolutely not hopeless anyway.
"III" was co-written and produced with Nicklas Sonne (DEFECTO, ARIES DESCENDANT, Danish Eurovision preliminaries).

VRÄVARNA and BLÄCK
Concert at Orangeriet in Borås, Sweden on October 19, 2024
Weird to book the same bands again at the same place as in February this year (it was supposed to be at Parkhallen a few months earlier though). Maybe they have lack of ideas? Last time was obviously a succees anyway, and sold out. It wasn't sold out this time though, even if there was many people.
BLÄCK was actually a little better this time. They play punk rock, and vary between more melodic and harder songs. Nice with covers of bands like EBBA GRÖN and NOICE. But the audience wasn't that wild yet.
Black Black

Black

Borås own dirt punks VRÄVARNA continue to celebrate their 40-year anniversary, but seemed to be calmer this time somehow. But the audience was really wild, and the band did a really good show, just as you could expect. They even played a few songs that I didn't reconize, which was probably new songs. Not as good as their old classics. If you don't like lyrics about gay sex, sex with animals and similar dirty stuff, then this is not a band for you. I think they are very funny though.

TIMELESS RAGE: The Devil's Masquerade
Metalapolis Records - Digital Single
After the departure of singer Frank Breuninger, TIMELESS RAGE found the new singer Nicolaj Ruhnow (ex-TOKYO BLADE, ex-DOMAIN). In 2023 the new recording of "Ocean Twilight", taken from the album "Untold", with Nicolaj on vocals, was thrown into the ring. And now they presents a new song with Nicolaj, "The Devil's Masquerade".
This is a symphonic power metal song with all the right ingredients. Epic but not too ambitious. A good old anthem you could say, as the chorus is very old school and catchy. Yes, I'm pretty sure that you will like this.

SUICIDE CHAIN: Cold Blood
Suicide Chain - Digital Single
This is the debut single from this fresh Finnish band, which was formed by a group of friends in the beginning of the year. They describe their music as a raw blend of hard rock, groove metal and radio pop. Luckily I can't hear that much of the last thing, so it's a catchy and powerful hard rock/groove metal song that we get here. And it sounds pretty good to me, so maybe you should check this out?

ANIALATOR: Death Is Calling
Xtreem Music on Oct. 22 - CD, LP, Cassette, Digital
It's 6 years since the last release from these Texas thrashers, the EP "Rise To Supremacy". And this seems to be their first full-length album, even though we just get 7 tracks here, so it's a short album that last for just about half an hour. But that's enough. And if you think it's too short, just play it again.
And there's a good chance that you will listen again and again, becuse this is thrash metal in the good old tradition, which most of us like. It's raw and vicious, but also a good mix of heavy and fast numbers. The faster songs reminds me of good old hardcore/punk actually, so it's not impossible that fans of that could like this too.
ANIALATOR was formed in 1986 in Corpus Christi, Texas by ex-DEVASTATION bassist Alex Dominguez. They released a 4-track demo in January 1987, and 2 EPs in 1988 and 1989. In the early 90s they changed their name to SUFFERANCE. In late 2015 ANIALATOR reformed, and released a CD compilation of their back catalog, titled "Mission of Death", in May 2017. A 5-track EP, ""Rise To Supremacy", was released in 2018.
Today's lineup is Alex Dominguez on bass, Tony Gomez on vocals, and JD de la Rosa on guitar and drums.

LASTKAJ 14: Djävulskorset
Second Class Kids Records - LP, CD, Digital
Lastkaj at Sticky Fingers
I don't know, but I expected it to sound as usual, and now it don't. Well, sometimes it sounds as usual, but there's also these melancholy parts here and there, which I don't really know if I like or not. It's absolutely a varied material anyway, no doubt about that. But unfortunately I get a feeling that the songs are a little weaker than what I'm used to hear when it comes to these Swedish trallpunk veterans. It's absolutely not bad though, as they have some really strong moments here and there. But they have done better. Sometimes it actually sounds like pop with electric guitars, which is not something positive according to me (luckily not too often though).
Yes, you're allowed to develop your sound of course. But that doesn't mean that everybody will like it. Sometimes it's best to just continue with the good old stuff instead.
On the CD version you also get their last EP, "Trallkrucifixet" (released just a couple of months ago), as a bonus. Which means almost an hour of music.

ÄRKEPUCKO/BROR DUKTIG: Livet Suger!
Second Class Kids Records - LP, CD, Digital
2 young Swedish bands join forces for a split album. And it seems like they were the winners of LASTKAJ 14's record scholarship 2023. Which is a chance for young Swedish punk bands to make a record and get some more fans.
The duo ÄRKEPUCKO play a melodic kind of punk rock in the old school. And these 6 songs are not the most energetic punk, but it's catchy and sounds good anyway. In the beginning at least. Because after a few songs they seems to get slower, and then it's almost rock instead of punk rock. And unfortunately those songs are not that strong, even if I would not say that it's total crap. The 2 first songs are their strongest here.
BROR DUKTIG play mainly trallpunk in the good old Swedish tradition, and most of these 8 tracks sounds really good. I think we have a winner here. With high energy they deliver a varied material that most fans of melodic punk rock in Swedish should enjoy. It sounds like in the good old 90s, which a old man like me really like. This is absolutely a band that I would like to hear some more with.

HELVETESMASKINEN: Slacker Superstar
Mocko Records - LP
HELVETESMASKINEN features members of Swedish bands like KSMB, SIXTEN REDLÖS, SKELETT, HYPER ACTIVES and G-ANX. But this doesn't really sound like any of those bands.
"Slacker Superstar" is their debut album, where play energetic rock in Swedish. 1 or 2 songs here could possibly go as punk rock. Most of it sounds like something that could have been done during the mid-80s or late 80s, but with a modern production then. So I would guess that mainly people who were young back then will like this more than young people today.
Pretty good stuff anyway, no doubt about that. What else I should say about this is a good question though.. But give them a try.

DHARMA GUNS: M.I.D.L.I.F.E Crisis
Rockhopper Music - Digital Single
DHARMA GUNS hailing from Helsinki, Finland, and they really knows how to rock.
This song is taken from their upcoming debut album, "Ex-Generation Superstars", and it's their third single so far. The music is a mix of action rock, punk rock and hard rock, but most of all it's rocking really good. I like this energetic song, and if you happens to like what they call action rock, then I think you should check it out at once.
The album will be released on November 1. And that could be really interesting to hear after listening to this single.

CRIMSON LOVE: L.A. (Save Me)
Curtain Call Records - Digital Single
Straight out of Tulsa, Oklahoma comes CRIMSON LOVE. They deliver a energetic and catchy rock n roll anthem, that is hot and explosive. It's uptempo and loud, as well as damn good. You should really check this out.
CRIMSON LOVE is part of what they call "The new wave of rock", so it's not any old 50s rock n roll (which is good too), but more like something from the 70s or 80s with a modern production. I wouldn't say no to some more songs in the future.
Not much else to add there..

APOCALYPSE ORCHESTRA: Virago
Despotz Records - Digital Single
This song is 9 minutes long and taken from their upcoming album "A Plague Upon Thee", which will be released on February 14, 2025. And this Swedish band blends medieval melodies with the crushing power of doom metal, creating an epic and atmospheric soundscape, and is known for fusing traditional folk instruments - such as the hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, and mandolas - with heavy, distorted guitars and thunderous drums.
It's a dark and melancholy song that we get here. And it takes a while before there's any action, about a minute. After that it takes another 1 and a half minutes before there's finally some vocals. But it sounds o.k. to me anyway.
APOCALYPSE ORCHESTRA formed in 2013, and "A Plague Upon Thee" will be their second full-length album.

SCOWL: Special
Dead Oceans - Digital Single
Bay Area hardcore band SCOWL has signed with Dead Oceans. And to celebrate the signing, they has released this new single.
This is a band that doesn't seems to care too much about categorization. Instead they move far beyond what's expected from a hardcore band. And this song is no exception of course. After all, it's even called "Special". It sounds more like some kind of modern metal than hardcore actually, possibly with elements of metalcore. It sounds pretty good though, and the chorus is hit friendly.

SPIDERS: Rock n' Roll Band
Wild Kingdom Records - Digital Single
Spiders some years ago
Yes! SPIDERS are back with a new single. It wasn't exactly yesterday that I heard them last time (not even last year I think). And it sounds like The HELLACOPTERS somehow, so this is a uptempo rocker that is hard to sit still to. I really like this song, so I look forward to hear some more in the future. And a new album, "Sharp Objects", will be released early next year, so there you have something to look forward to.

WINDING ROAD: Fill My Sails
Pride & Joy Music on Oct. 18 - CD
Swedish band WINDING ROAD was formed in 2018 by Jan Hedlund (COASTLINE) and Magnus Åkerlund (BLENDER) for the love of melodic rock and AOR. On vocals they recruited Jonas Tyskhagen (DOMINO DRIVE), and their self-titled debut was released by AOR Heaven in March 2021. Now they are back with their second album, "Fill My Sails", where we also get guest appearances from Thomas Larsson (Glenn Hughes) and Fredrik Folkare (UNLEASHED).
Well, I would say that you will get exactly what you can expect when you listen to this album. But it's a really strong material that they have, so that there's nothing unique doesn't really matter at all. I strongly recomend that all fans of this kind of music check this out.
Best song might be "Devil's Daughter", which they spice with a saxophone.

NATIONWIDE: Echoes
Pride & Joy Music on Oct. 18 - CD
In 2023 longtime friends and songwriters Carl Berglund (guitar/keyboards) and Peter Ledin (guitar) decided to put together the band that they dreamed of, a band that would close the gap between classic AOR and modern rock and bring something new to the melodic rock scene. They teamed up with bass player Mikael Hagström (ex-AGE OF REFLECTION) and drummer Richard Holmgren (ex-SCAAR, GRAND DESIGN, WOLF) to form the new melodic rock group NATIONWIDE. The final piece was Daniel Groth on vocals.
What we get might not be anything new at all, but a pretty classic, catchy and melodic 80s sound with a modern production. It sounds really good to me though, so I hardly complain. They have simply made a great album with lots of really good songs. This is an album that you absolutely should check out.

BLIND EGO: The Hunting Party
Gentle Art of Music/Soulfood on Oct. 18 - CD, LP
BLIND EGO is a solo adventure by Kalle Wallner, guitarist for the German art rock band RPWL. This is something different than that band though, as this is progressive rock. It's not any advanced prog rock that we get here, but more normal music (or however I should explain it?). It sounds good anyway, no doubt about that. So you should of course give this a try if you like prog rock.
Now Kalle have not done everything himself here. He is joined by metalcore singer Kevin Kears (CYANT), who is doing something completely different than what he's used to. And he's doing it very good. Among the other guys are drummer Michael Christoph and Wallner's long-time musical companion Yogi Lang (RPWL), who not only leaves his mark on the album as co-producer and keyboardist, but is also responsible for the mix and mastering.
"The Hunting Party" is the fifth studio album. He has also released a live album in 2017 and an album under his own name in 2022.
BLIND EGO will do some tour dates in Germany and the Netherlands between November 20-24.

HIGH VIS: Guided Tour
Dais Records on Oct. 18 - CD, LP, Digital
London rockers HIGH VIS was born in 2016 from a cross-section of beloved UK punk groups (like DIRTY MONEY, TREMORS, CITY DWELLER, REFLECT, SHAME etc). They are said to fuse the fury of English street punk with touches of Brit pop melody, neo-psychedelia swirl, wiry post-punk rhythm, and even bits of Madchester groove. Their debut album, "No Sense No Feeling", was released in 2019, and was followed by a EP, "Society Exists", in 2020. A second album, "Blending", was released in 2022.
As this band blend so many different genres, they don't exactly make it easy for themselves or me as a reviewer. But I guess that's the whole idea? Anyway, I would describe most of these songs as post-punk or possibly post-rock. But I guess you could just as well call this indie rock or alternative rock instead. "Mind's A Lie" is just a stupid pop song though, and I don't like it at all.
That they have a varied material should not come as a surprise, and there's both good and bad stuff here. In general a o.k. album though.

The GRISTLE: Heavy Cream
Icons Creating Evil Art - Digital Single
The GRISTLE is a Swedish duo with Max Malmquist (guitar/vocals) and Andreas Angel (drums/vocals), and they released a new digital EP, "Barf!", on October 9. This single is a taste of that.
Their sound is a wild mix of punk, blues, James Brown's groove and BLACK SABBATH's heaviness - "In other words, maxed out rock n roll from a double barreled shotgun", as the press release says. But you could of course simply call this garage rock. It sounds really good anyway. It'raw and dirty, heavy and bluesy. You should definitely give this a try.
The GRISTLE are going on a very short 3-date tour in Germany later this month.

FERAL: To Usurp The Thrones
Transcending Obscurity Records on Oct. 18 - LP, CD, Cassette, Digital
Swedish death metallers FERAL released a split with crust-ridden death metallers and label mates CRAWL last year. And now FERAL will release a brand new full-length album.
Couldn't they have done something about the volume on this recording? It's not normal to have to play on highest volume to hear anything at all you know. But it could on the other hand be worth turning up the volume, and especially if you're a fan of old school HM-2 death metal from Sweden and USA, because this is excellent! This is the way I want my death metal. No complicated and progressive or experimental crap, and no modern influences at all. You can call me old and boring if you want to, I don't give a shit as I am actually old.

ASTRAL DOORS: The End Of It All
Metalville Records on Oct. 18 - CD, LP, Fan Box
ASTRAL DOORS was founded in Borlänge, Sweden in 2003. It's already 5 years since their last album, "Worship Or Die", was released. But now the wait is over, as they will release their 10th album, "The End Of It All". The title is a reflection on what the world looks like today, but also somehow a way of saying that this might be their last album. But I guess you never know. This could just as well be a new beginning instead..
To me this sounds just as they use to, so no old fan should be dissapointed, as this is a very safe album without any kind of surprises at all. In other words we get a hefty dose of traditional and powerful heavy metal and a strong material. The guys seem to deliver as if they were at the peak of their career. So if this is the end, then they go away in style and with something that they can be really proud of.

OHRENFEINDT: Wenn Der Taufel Anruft
Metalville Records on Oct. 18 - CD, LP, Fan Box
OHRENFEINDT is more or less like a good old AC/DC in German. They have already been around for 30 years, and this is their 10th studio album. Their last release was a live album, "Krawallgeigensymphonie", in 2022, which was really good. And most of the 11 tracks on this new album sounds really good too, so the less good songs here are few. So if you like high energy hard rock n roll without any modern ideas, then you should really check out this German trio.

The PROGRESSIVE SOULS COLLECTIVE: Encore Vol. 1: Sonic Tributes
Metalville Records on Oct. 18 - Digital Album
This band begin with a song that is just under 20 minutes, which seems to be a medley. They continue with a shorter song, which is just 6:25 minutes, before they go on another long adventure that last for 15:43 minutes. The 2 last songs are 7 minutes long. But then we talk about a progressive rock band here, so the length of the songs is hardly a surprise. They succeed to keep the songs alive all the way though, so there's no dead moments or any rubbish.
The material on this album consists exclusively of cover songs by bands like GENESIS, MASSIVE ATTACK, YES, TOTO and PINK FLOYD. Not much that I reconized, but it sounds good anyway as it sounds exactly like progressive rock use to sound according to me.

OUSIODES: The Forest
Shaded Moon Entertainment - CD
OUSIODES is a solo project featuring U.S. born multi-instrumentalist Ollie Bernstein. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2017, he went to the Far East, and was so fascinated by the Japanese music scene that he's living there now. He is probably most well-known for his role in the Japanese band ILLUSION FORCE.
When he goes solo, Bernstein seamlessly merges classical, jazz and broadway instrumentation with melodic power metal. And the result is something that is almost as majestic as QUEEN. So yes, this is another dramatic power metal album with very ambitious compositions. But he is both a very good musician and singer. And on top of that he also succeed to make great songs. So this is a very good album, that fans of more epic metal should give a try.
Most songs are in English, but a couple of them are in Japanese (those are sung by other people). "The Forest" is his 4th album.

MinstreliX: Minstrelics
Shaded Moon Entertainment - CD
This Japanese band started in 2004, and this is their 6th full-length album. Among their influences are melodic power metal from Europe. But they also add elements of hard rock, death metal, ethnic music, classical music, jazz, game music, anime music and pop. This gives them a very ambitious sound, which I almost want to describe as neo-classical/symphonic power metal. It's very dramatic anyway, so they call it dramatic power metal.
It sounds like MinstreliX is singing in Japanese, but most titles are in English. Anyway.. It's a symphonic and bombastic kind of power metal that we get from this band. And even though they vary between faster and slower numbers, it soon becomes more or less the same. You simply know this band's sound after just a few songs. But it sounds good, so it's not such a big problem. They are also very skilled musicians, so even when it's as most fast and intense, it's still good.
This is a European edition, where we get an exclusive bonus track, which is not so interesting as it's a instrumental song. The only bad song on this excellent album.

DIAMOND ALICE: Diamond Alice
Diamond Alice - LP, CD, Digital
This self-released debut album is heavily inspired by the transition from glam metal to sleaze rock in the late 80s and early 90s, channeling bands like SHOTGUN MESSIAH, SKID ROW and WILDSIDE among others. It was recorded on a Tascam 688 8-track cassette recorder, which makes it sound like a demo from the 80s. But I think that's just cool, and gives it some extra charm and rawness.
DIAMOND ALICE seems to be the brainchild of the American Scott Michaels, who take care of most things except for drums. Session drummer on this recording is Chris Reed.
Well, most of these 9 tracks sounds good, and he has really succeeded to catch the sound he was looking for. But I can't say that I hear any anthems or future classics here. That would have been the extra pinch of salt that would have made the album even better. Still worth checking out though if you like old glam metal/sleaze rock.

BOMBUS: Leave And Let Die
Black Lodge Records - Digital Single
Old photo
As you might know already, Swedish heavy rock/metal band BOMBUS will release a new album, "Your Blood", on November 1. And this little masterpiece is a taste of that album. It's described as "a ferocious anthem that pushes the boundaries of their signature sound". Well, one thing is for sure, it's one of the better songs from the album, and that album is full of great songs. It's "an electrifying mix of thunderous riffs, raw vocals, and explosive energy, showcasing the band's relentless drive and evolution", as the press release says. And I say that you have to check this out. End of the story.

WAR DOGS: Only The Stars Are Left
Fighter Records on Oct. 15 - CD, LP, Digital
WAR DOGS is a heavy metal band from Spain, and there seems to be lots of them down there nowadays. They play a epic kind of heavy metal, influenced by legends like IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST and MANILLA ROAD, while integrating modern elements seen in bands like VISIGOTH and ETERNAL CHAMPION. I would say that it's most of all the classic sound that I hear in these songs, so I hardly complain.
While some other Spanish heavy metal bands choose to sing in Spanish, WAR DOGS choose to sing in English. This is definitely worth checking out.

STARCRAZY: Starcrazy
Starcrazy on Oct. 18 - LP, CD, Digital
Sydney glam rockers STARCRAZY has previously released 2 EPs, that they were kind enough to send me for review, but this is their full-length debut. They continue to blend elements of 70s glam rock, power pop and 80s alternative metal. The result is just as happy, catchy and melodic as usual. On top of that the songs are also of the same high quality as they use to be. So they have in other words succeeded to make a great album that you really should check out.
Among their influences are JANE'S ADDICTION, CHEAP TRICK, VAN HALEN, The SWEET and ALICE COOPER. But it's not impossible that fans of a band like The DARKNESS could like this.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this must be one of the few (maybe the only) band who have a song called "Fanzine". And for those of you who doesn't know what a fanzine is, it's a self-made magazine by fans for fans (I did one myself in the 90s before I went online in 2001). Funny and cool.

SINNER'S BLOOD: Dark Horizons
Frontiers Music s.r.l. - CD, Digital
"Dark Horizons" is the second album from Chilean heavy metal band SINNER'S BLOOD. The band seems to be led by James Robledo (lead vocals) and Nasson (guitars, vocals and programming, and also member of CHAOS MAGIC). Bass is played by Nicolás Fischer and drums by Guillermo Pereira.
James has also released 2 solo albums, and Nasson has released 1. Nasson has also been working with several world renowned artists through the years, while Nicolás Fischer has been performing for years as a singer and guitarist for a variety of progressive music acts. So we have a bunch of experienced people here.
This album is a continuation of the debut, which was released in 2020. In other words melodic heavy metal with strong songwriting and superb vocals. Yes this is something that you really should check out if you like that, because these people have made a really good album with a very familiar sound and fantastic songs.

RAD: Ravenous Scavenger
Rad - Digital Single
There seems to be lots of thrash bands in the UK nowadays, and in Brighton we can find RAD. The band's influences comes from skateboarding, Wyld Stalyns, and all things gnarly and bodacious. They blend classic 80s thrash and crossover with elements of modern metal and hardcore, adding a splash of deathcore. It sounds heavy and brutal without being extreme, and it's a pretty good song, but not much else as it goes in and out without any deeper impression.
The band will be releasing more music in 2024.

OBSOLETION: Obsoletion
Sentient Ruin on Oct. 11 - LP, Cassette, Digital
OBSOLETION is a Brazilian band, who deliver a hybrid of blackened hardcore/punk and primordial heavy metal, with influences of CRO-MAGS, INTEGRITY, SHEER TERROR, MAYHEM, CELTIC FROST, HELLHAMMER, G.I.S.M., CARNIVORE and POSSESSED. This is their debut album, and it's harsh and heavy, as well as a dark and violent exprience. Most songs are pretty short, just around 1-2 minutes, so it's over pretty fast. But there's actually no reason for this to be any longer than that.
Most of these 10 songs sounds good, so this is listenable if you like raw music.

KNIGHTSUNE: Fearless
Art Gates Records on Oct. 11 - CD
This album contains a collaboration of singers Herbie Langhans (FIREWIND, Tobias Sammets's AVANTASIA, SONIC HAVEN), Memphis Jiménez (PINBALL WIZARD and Paraíso Seis) and Elisa C. Martín. KNIGHTSUNE is a band though, so they are just guest singers.
KNIGHTSUNE formed in the beginning of 2017 and hailing from Zaragoza, Spain. Their sound is rooted in heavy, power and thrash metal, and their debut album was self-published in 2021. On this new album, "Fearless", they have also added influences of melodic death, groove, prog, and almost any other genre under the metal sphere, aiming to integrate modern elements into their classic-like style.
Well, even if there's lots of different elements here, the songs are not so bad. I don't think that anything is there without a reason, and they are also very good at what they are doing. So if a modern mix of heavy metal sounds exiting to you, then you should give this band a chance.

Francesco Marras: More Than Life
Hell Tour Productions - Digital Single
Sardinian guitarist Francesco Marras (TYGERS OF PAN TANG, SCREAMING SHADOWS) return with another single. It begins a little softer, but soon becomes more energetic before the chorus comes in. A pretty o.k. hard rock song, but he have done better.
I guess this song will fit in better on an album than as a single actually.
I don't really know what else I should say..

S.P.I.T: Play It Foul
S.P.I.T - Digital Single
S.P.I.T is a Finnish band that creates raw rock n roll with traditional methods, they say. It's hair metal, goth n roll and Marshall full stacks, and this song is inspired by their biggest inspiration: 80s hard rock. It sounds like hard rock from the streets, so there's dirt and attitude. This is a very good song, and you should of course give it a try.
It could be nice to hear some more with this band in the future.

SMASH ATOMS: Smash Atoms
M-Theory Audio on Oct. 11 - LP, CD, Digital
What we have here is a Swedish band that is highly influenced by the grunge and alternative rock movement of the 90s. But they also blend in more modern influences as well.
Even if this is their debut album, the band was originally formed in 2012. They released a demo and did a handful of shows before U.S.-born singer Glen Gilbert stepped out and the remaining trio changed their name to The TORCH, with guitarist Martin Söderqvist also handling vocals. That band recorded 2 albums. Then Glen and the guys reconnected 2 years ago, and decided to give SMASH ATOMS another chance.
Well, this sounds good to me. So if you like the dark and heavy sound of the 90s, then I think you should give these guys a try, because I'm pretty sure that you could like what you hear.

IMPERIAL AGE: Gnosis
Atlantean Records - Digital Single
IMPERIAL AGE is a modern metal band with epic symphonic elements. They say that they are the descendants of Atlantis, weaving ancient lore into modern music. From pyramids to breakdowns they create a musical experience which combines the energy of heavy metal with the altitude of a high fantasy blockbuster, with songs about ancient civilizations, secret magical orders and the unquenchable desire for knowledge and freedom.
The true story is that the band was founded in Moscow in 2012. But when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, singers Aor and Jane Odintsova moved to the UK. The other Russian members did not follow, and were replaced by British and Italian musicians. They have so far released 3 albums.
This song goes in many different directions, but I would mainly describe it as modern symphonic metal, even though there's also some extreme metal as well (short parts). It sounds big and ambitious. So if you like something more majestic, then I guess this could be worth a try.

24/7 DIVA HEAVEN: Gift
Noisolution on Oct. 11 - LP, CD, Digital
Berlin-based riot grrrls 24/7 blend uptempo punk rockers with grungy alternative rock and some more fragile pieces, as well as some noise rock. So it's without a doubt a varied album that they have made. Most of it sounds really good though.
Their debut album, "Stress", was released in 2021, and it was really good too. "Gift" is their second full-length.
The music is based on fuzzy riffs and catchy hooklines, which they spice with a political message and self-irony. Sometimes it's more energetic, sometimes they slow down a little. It's simply wild, raw and beautiful. You should really give this trio a try.
The only thing I didn't like here was that last piano piece.

AMPUTATE: Abysmal Ascent
Massacre Records on Oct. 11 - CD, LP
Swizz death metallers AMPUTATE deliver with anger and raw power, and it sounds exactly like it should according to me. It's a very true and honest album, that they can be really proud of. If you hate the modern and overproduced sound, then this is what you need. 10 tracks straight in your face without any unnecessary rubbish, yet very professionally performed. I don't think I have to say more than that..
",Abysmal Ascent" is the band's third album.

HELL IS OTHER PEOPLE: Moirae
Transcending Obscurity Records on Oct. 11 - LP, CD, Digital
This Canadian band is hardly here to make you happy. Their music is dark and melancholy, as well as anxious. It sounds like it's being performed by a tormented soul, and hardly a cheerful lad. At the same time it's actually atmospheric as well.
We talk about something that could be called atmospheric black metal or post-black metal. 5 tracks is what we get, and they are from 6:43 up to 13:28 minutes, so it's not any short pieces. But as there's so many different moods in this band's music, it works without being too long and boring. There's both extreme and softer parts, which keeps the songs alive.

GUERILLA TEENS: I Cyclops/Pride Of The Savanna
Heavy Medication Records - 7" Single
GUERILLA TEENS hailing from Portland, USA. They play a raw and dirty rock n roll with a touch of early punk. So it's pretty cool stuff. And these 2 songs are both really good, and absolutely worth listening to. My opinion is that "I Cyclops" should actually be a classic among the early punks. So do something good today and listen to this masterpiece, because I'm pretty sure that you will like it too.
The band has previoulsy released a few records (in diffrent shapes) on various labels.

GATES OPEN: Black Clouds Over The World
Inverse Records - Digital EP
GATES OPEN is a Finnish blackened death/thrash metal band founded in early 2023 by Jere Neejärvi (guitarist/composer) and Tommi Manninen (singer). The band has previously released 3 singles and a full-length album, "Voices After Silence" (Feb. 2024). Now they can also add this 6-track EP to their discography.
And what can I say? I think this sounds just like it should. They have some really good songs here, there's no doubt about that. It might not be the fastest death/thrash that we get, but it's hardly that slow either. I would actually say that some songs are almost melodic, yet with brutal vocals. This is absolutely worth checking out.

DECIMATOR: 'Til The Enemies Are Gone
Wormholedeath Records - Digital Album
This is a power/thrash/traditional metal band from Sydney, Australia, founded in January 2021. "'Til The Enemies Are Gone" is their debut album, but sounds like a demo recording to me. And it was honestly not so funny to listen to as I was hoping for. But it has potential at least, so it's not impossible that it could have been a little better with a better production.
We get 8 tracks of some kind of hard and powerful metal. And the best song here must be "Legions", which I think sounds more like RUNNING WILD. A other song worth to mention is "Decimator", which is more or less thrash metal. The rest is just o.k.

DECAYED EXISTENCE: The Beginning Of Sorrows
Rottweiler Records on Oct. 11 - CD, Digital
California death metallers DECAYED EXISTENCE formed back in 1991. And they don't seems to care too much about what's trendy at the moment, but continue to play their classic death metal on this new album. But who doesn't like that?
Now it might not really be the classic Swedish death metal that we talk about, but the American instead. It sounds really heavy and powerful, and this is not so bad at all. Brutal enough to crush bones, and that's good enough.
5 of the songs are studio recordings, while 3 are live tracks.

CULT OF LUNA: Tannhäuser/Derive
Epitaph Records - Digital Single
REFUSED are continuing the overdue 25th anniversary celebration of their seminal 1998 record with "The Shape Of Punk To Come Obliterated" - a 12-song tribute album featuring covers from various hardcore and metal bands, available to stream on November 8 via Epitaph Records. And now they have shared a dark and expansive take on the operatic 10-minute saga "Tannhäuser/Derive", reimagined by fellow Swedes CULT OF LUNA.
Now I have not heard the original version, but it's said that it was 6 minutes long. And now CULT OF LUNA have made it even longer. Not really sure what that was good for, as this is just some atmospheric shit according to me. Completely useless!
A second pressing of REFUSED's "The Shape Of Punk To Come" vinyl re-issue is expected to ship in March 2025.

CONFESS: Spitfire
Confess - Digital Single
CONFESS is a glam/sleaze metal band from Sweden. And this new single is their first release since 2020. It's said to be a hard-hitting track and a testament to the band's signature blend of raw energy, gritty guitar riffs, and sing-along choruses. It can also be described as a high-octane anthem in good old style. Because good it is.
This is probably a perfect party starter. Fans of other Swedish bands like HARDCORE SUPERSTAR and CRASHDÏET should absolutely give this a try.

BLACK PAISLEY: Hole In The Sky
Black Paisley - Digital Single
This melodic rocker is delivered with drive and energy. They give a modern twist to the classic 80s and 90s arena rock sound, with a catchy chorus. A perfect start for the weekend, but will probably also work fine as a song that can take you through the week, as it can easily make you a little happier (if only for a few minutes). Yes, every fan of melodic rock should check this out immediately.

SHADOW SHOW: Baba Yaga/Spy Baloon
Rogue Records on Oct. 10 - 7" Single, Digital
Following the release of their sophomore album, "Fantasy Now!" (Little Cloud Records/Stolen Body Records), Detroit psych pop trio SHADOW SHOW return with a double a-side 45 rpm via Rogue Records.
"Baba Yaga" "dances after dark under the influence of 70s eastern European grooves, showcasing the group's flexibility and willingness to transcend genres", according to the press info. While "Spy Baloon" "harnesses the whimsical psychedelia of the 1960s ala Syd Barrett, and emphasizes the group's utilization of the studio as an instrument with inclusions of synthesizers, tape delays, and other various overdubs to their harmonious wall of sound".
It might not be the wildest party that I have been to, but it sounds good anyway. No doubt about that. If you like music from the 60s, then I'm pretty sure that you will like this too, because it doesn't sound modern at all (and thanks for that).

The WRONG SOCIETY: Misery Has Got Me Down
Rogue Records on Oct. 10 - 7" Single, Digital
The WRONG SOCIETY formed 2012 in Hamburg, Germany, and they play a blend of moody garage punk and psych, often focusing on the bitter side of love, influenced by the sounds of mid-60s U.S. Teen Beat bands. They have previously released 5 singles and 1 LP on different labels.
Side A, "Misery Has Got Me Down", is a straight 66 style garage rocker. On side B we have "Find Me Gone", which is a lysergic swirling organ ballad about vanishing.
Well, this is another band who has really succeeded to catchy that typical sound of the 60s. But I really like that, and this sounds really good. We get 2 different sides of the band here as the first side is uptempo, and the second a little slower.

SPRINTS: Feast
City Slang - Digital Single
Dublin rockers SPRINTS released a new single a couple of weeks ago. And this is the first release with new guitarist Zac Stephenson, following the departure of founding member Colm O'Reilly.
This song is inspired by the 90s grunge and alternative rock, but could just as well be called dark punk rock. Because it's a dark song somehow. It last for 2 and a half minutes, and it's a pretty good song anyway, even if it might not be excellent.
SPRINTS released their debut album, "Letter To Self", in January. I think they has released a few EPs before that.

The MERINGUES: Pavlova's Dog
The MERINGUES - LP, Digital
The MERINGUES is a post-punk band from Kingston, Ontario, and this seems to be their second album.
They blend their post-punk with some power pop and punk rock, and this is sometimes so catchy that even your pop friends (if you have any) probably will like this. Other times they are more raw, but they always seems to deliver with big enthusiasm and energy, so I would guess that this mixed gender quartet are pretty young (compared to me anyway). Many songs are sung by more than 1 person, which I like. They succeed to have a sound that is both nostalgic and modern at the same time, and it sounds really good. I would guess that this is the kind of band that can work for many different music fans, and not just punk rockers.

Filippa Nässil: American Diaries
Despotz Records - LP, CD, Digital
Filippa with Thundermother many years ago
THUNDERMOTHER queen Filippa Nässil releases her first solo album. Inspiration for these songs came when THUNDERMOTHER spent 2 months and 3 weeks in USA in the fall of 2022 supporting SCORPIONS. The lyrics are based on her time there, and the music was written when she came back home to Sweden. And if you expect some energetic and hard rock n roll, then you will be very dissapointed. Because this is more like soft blues rock and country rock. Very American of course.
As this album includes both English and Swedish versions of all songs, there's actually just 6 songs that we get here. Some are a little better, while others are not so interesting to me. And I prefer the English versions before the Swedish. Because those Swedish versions would probably fit perfect for radio, which is not something that I listen to. And then I'm not talking about any rock channel, but P4 as we have here in Sweden, which is for old people. So you could say that this is a quite mature album.
I might not have been so impressed by the singles, but now that I have heard the whole album, it's not as bad as I first thought it would be. Always something..

PANZERCHRIST: Sister Death
Emanzipation Productions on Oct. 4 - Digital Single
Danish death metallers PANZERCHRIST are warming us up for their next full-length release, and it's a fast and vicious song that we get as a first taste. So if you like that, then "Sister Death" will not dissapoint you, because this is good stuff. But now that you know that, I don't have much else to say about this song.
The band formed in 1993 and released 5 albums until 2006. In 2021 they were back again.

AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS: Big Dreams
Rough Trade - Digital Single
Press Photo
This song is a softer thing, and not really what I'm used to hear from these Australian punk rockers. I guess it will take a few listenings to get used to it, because this is something different, almost a ballad actually. And I guess that this shows us how they have developed their sound through the years. Intresting somehow, that's all I can say..
The band will release their first album in 3 years, titled "Cartoon Darkness", on October 25. In November they will be touring in Europe.

AVALANCHE: Dad I Joined A Rock N Roll Band
Avalanche - Digital Single
Sydney hard rockers AVALANCHE gives us a new single, and it's rocking as usual. Like I have said before, this is something that you should check out if you like ass kicking hard rock n roll from Australia, like ROSE TATTOO, AC/DC and AIRBOURNE. Because this band keep the good old tradition alive, and this song is a good proof of that.
So what else can I say then? Not much. Just listen and enjoy.

CUTLASS: Walk The Plank
Cutlass - CD, Digital
This London based pirate heavy metal band was formerly known as PIRATES OF METAL. The new name CUTLASS is said to reflect the harder, sharper edge in their music, as they fuse their thrash influences to their classic metal roots. So this is a mixture of IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, METALLICA, TESTAMENT, HELLOWEEN and RUNNING WILD.
If I'm not wrong, I have already heard most of these songs (maybe all?) on their previous EP, "Cuts From The Deep", and a few singles (all released as PIRATES OF METAL). But it still sounds very good. So if you're a fan of classic heavy metal with a pirate theme, like RUNNING WILD for example, then you should really check out this band. And there's not much else to add about that..

DEF/LIGHT: Frequency Of Fear
Def/Light - Digital Album
They could easily have thrown away that useless intro. But after that it's full speed ahead.
DEF/LIGHT is a Ukrainian black metal band, and this album is inspired by the works of horror masters such as Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, and Robert Bloch, reflecting a mystical world beyond our comprehension. It explores the dark aspects of human nature.
DEF/LIGHT formed in 2001 and have made 6 releases and several European tours. In 2017 the band evolved into a studio project with just 2 members. One of them emigrated to Israel, but they have continued to make music together.
Well, what can I say? This sounds more or less just like black metal should, so it could absolutely be worth a try if you like it fast and brutal without any atmospheric stuff.

VAN WAR: Even After The Pain
Van War - Digital Single
VAN WAR is the latest project from former ATTIKA and ONWARD vocalist Rob Van War, and this is their debut single. It's classic hard rock/heavy metal that we get, drawing inspiration from the legendary sounds of KISS, ACCEPT, and classic JUDAS PRIEST. At the same time they are not afraid to take it to new territories. So in the end it's a mix of old and new.
This is a good song, so if they have more songs that is this good, then it could be interesting to hear some more in the future. In other words, check out.

ECLIPSE: Megalomanium II
Frontiers Music s.r.l. - CD, LP, Digital
Swedish melodic hard rockers ECLIPSE have been around for a few years now, and are renowned for their signature sound of massive hooks and stellar musicianship. They have become very popular, and not just here in Sweden. And with this new album no one should be dissapointed, because what we get is more or less what we got used to when it comes to ECLIPSE. In other words very good songs with lots of catchy choruses, or melodic chorus hard rock as I saw that the frontman, Erik Mårtensson, call it.
Sure, there might be a couple of weaker moments here and there. But somehow they fit in when it comes to the album format, so that's not much to cry about. And as I think I have said before, a weaker song with ECLIPSE is in most cases much stronger than a weak song with most other bands in this genre.

STEELCITY: Reverence
Frontiers Music s.r.l. - CD, Digital
STEELCITY is a hard rock band from USA. It's a guitar-driven and powerful sound that they gives us on this album, and it will probably remind you of the bands from the 80s. Now it also happens to be just as good as any of the bands from that era, so you should really give this album a chance if that's what you like. Not 1 weak song on the whole album, and that's really strong.
I don't really know what else I should say, but they have previously released 2 albums: "Fortress" in 2018 and "Mach II" in 2019. So if you like this album, then you have some more to check out.

THRASHERWOLF: Inside The Sickened Mind
Thrasherwolf on Oct. 4 - CD, Digital / Vicious Witch Records in November - Cassette
It's 4 years since THRASHERWOLF released their debut album, "We Are Revolution". Now they return with "Inside The Sickened Mind", and the thrash metal adventure continues. It's said that they have stepped up everything to the next level this time, with melodic progressions, wicked hooks and outstanding choruses.
They are from London, UK, but sounds like they would be from the States. Every song here is worth to bang your head to with the fist in the air. So this is of course something that you really should give a try, and there's not much else to say about that.

LIVLØS: The Crescent King
Noctum Productions on Oct. 4 - LP, CD, Digital
Danish death metallers LIVLØS are on their 10th year of existence, and "The Crescent King" is their third full-length album, and it's a concept album about humankind (seems to be a poular subject nowadays).
This seems to be a band that always want to develop their sound and their skills. They blend heavy grooves with melancholic melodies and progressive musicianship. It's ambitious, experimental and majestic music. But at the same time also hard and heavy without being slow. Not bad at all.

EDEN: Alma De Libertad
Thornado Music on Oct. 4 - CD
It seems like there's more than 1 band named EDEN. There's actually several of them: 1 from Israel, a vocal group from South Africa and a boy band from Ireland, a rock/blues/pop band from the Pacific Northwest and a dark wave band from Australia, to name a few. What we have here is a heavy metal band, that began their adventures in 2002. I'm actually not really sure where they are from, but it sounds like they sing in Spanish anyway. After several albums and tours, they decided to take a break in 2013. But in 2016 they were back again. Now they have come to their 6th full-length album, "Alma De Libertad".
This group play a powerful but melodic kind of heavy metal, and even though they might not have anything that is extra good, these 10 songs are not bad at all. They seems to be experienced and deliver their songs with passion. Could be worth a try if you like heavy metal in Spanish.

DeVICIOUS: Everything
Metalapolis Records - Digital Single
DeVICIOUS presents their new singer Stephan Lipp and new drummer Micha Kapser with a new version of their first single, "Everything". It's a melodic hard rock song which sounds like something from the 80s. Not bad at all, so it could be worth a try if you like that.
What else I should say about this is a good question though.. Well, the new guys seems to do a good job anyway.

DEVENIAL VERDICT: Blessing Of Despair
Transcending Obscurity Records on Oct. 4 - LP, CD, Cassette, Digital
Finnish band DEVENIAL VERDICT play a dissonant and atmospheric kind of death metal. It's heavy and brutal, but also dark and gloomy at the same time. This gives them a powerful and personal sound. This is hardly the fastest or most extreme band in this genre, even if they can have a little outburst sometimes. I would say that it's almost on the border to doom/death metal actually. So if you like that, then I guess you should give these guys a try.
What else should I write then? Well, I don't really know..
